자연과학은 인류문명의 발생과 함께 시작한 학문으로, 자연에 대한 인간의 끊임없는 실증적 탐구 노력이 논리적으로 축적된 체계입니다.
고대에서 현대까지 자연과학은 자연에 대한 인간의 맹목적인 경배와 두려움, 편견 등을 타파하는 역할을 하였을 뿐만 아니라, 자연 속에 숨은 원리를 밝혀냄으로서, 근대 이후 다양한 분야의 과학과 공학의 발달에 기반이 되었습니다. 그러나 이러한 비약적인 발달이 자연과학의 분야를 지나치게 세분화시키면서, 자연의 실체에 대한 총체적이며 다면적인 규명이 오히려 어려워지는 경향이 생기게 되었습니다. 최근에 이를 극복하기 위해 자연과학의 제 분야가 서로 소통하며 새로운 방식으로 탐구하려는 학제간 연구가 권장 받고 있습니다
이러한 추세에 발맞춰 충남대학교 자연과학의 전반적인 연구 경쟁력을 향상하기 위해서, 대학 내에서 자연과학의 다양한 연구 분야가 결집하여 각 분야의 연구 방법과 전문 인력을 상호 활용할 수 있는 연구소의 설립이 필요한 시점입니다. 따라서 자연과학 연구 전반에 기초를 제공하는 체계를 활성화하고, 학제간 연구를 능동적으로 지원할 기관이 필요하다는 인식하에 “자연과학연구소”의 설립을 추진하기에 이르렀습니다.
Research Institute of Natural Sciences (RINS)
Born from human curiosity on nature at the dawn of civilization, natural sciences are systems of logically collected knowledge about nature, resulted from endless effort by generations of scientists. Natural sciences revealed hidden principles of nature by logically and experimentally analyzing tremendously complicated natural phenomena, thus laying stony foundations of various modern engineering fields that flourish since industrial revolution. However, as natural sciences prosper, they become too fractionated to communicate among communities outside the fields of interest. In order to overcome the barrier of fractionation, the CNU Research Institute of Natural Sciences encourages participants to exchange ideas and methods with scientists beyond their main research fields. The inter-disciplinary researches can be effectively carried out in the institute since it consists of researchers from various science academia.
The Research Institute of Natural Sciences was founded in 2006, inheriting the great tradition of the former Research Institute of Basic Sciences that had successfully led CNU science activities over the past 30 years. It now supports research activities of 27 full-time faculty members in the departments of astronomy and space sciences, geological environments, statistics, physics, and biochemistry. More than a dozen of research projects are funded by outside sources and hundreds of research papers are published a year by members in the institute.
